10 Tips for Successful Job Hunting

  1. Take the label (I am a retail manager, a teacher, etc…) off yourself. Describe yourself instead in terms of what you are good at. “I am good at organizing groups and leading people to accomplish goals”.

  2. Do not expect that you can necessarily find the same exact kind of work you have been doing in the past. Be prepared to define other lines of work that require skills you possess.

  3. Discover some alternative names for the kind of job you are seeking.

  4. Look as sharp as you can at all times when you are outside of your home. You never know who you will see you and you want to convey a put together image.

  5. Use as many different job search approaches and resources as possible.

  6. Don’t let rejection discourage you. As some say, the more No’s you get out of the way, the closer you are to a Yes!

  7. Be gently persistent and go back to places that interested you even if they had no openings or anticipated any openings earlier.

  8. If your job hunt isn’t going well consider focusing more on smaller organizations. Traditionally more new positions are created by smaller employers.

  9. If you are having trouble finding opportunities, rather than saying “there are no jobs out there” consider restating the situation along the lines – “given my lack of success so far, I need to incorporate new strategies and resources into my job search”.

  10. Looking for a job is a job. You should be prepared to put in 8 hours a day for at least 5 days every week.
